Oskar Zawisza

Oskar Zawisza (November 23, 1878 in Jabłonków - January 18, 1933 in Cierlicko) was a Polish Catholic priest, composer and educational activist.
He was son of a teacher from Jabłonków. Zawisza finished German high school in Bielsko and theologic studies in Olomouc. He was pupil of Czech composer Josef Nešvera. Zawisza was ordinated as a priest on July 23, 1902. Then he became curate in Piotrowice, Błędowice Dolne, Niemiecka Lutynia, Strumień and Cieszyn. On July 1, 1911 he became a rector in Cierlicko.
He collaborated with Gwiazdka Cieszyńska and Zaranie Śląskie newspapers. Zawisza conducted historical and etnographic research and wrote also several books: Dzieje Strumienia (History of Strumień), Dzieje Karwiny (History of Karwina) and Śpiewnik góralski (Highlander's songbook); and operas Dożynki, Święta Barbara and Czarne diamenty, symphonic poem Znad brzegów Olzy and symphony Z niwy śląskiej.
