Orwell, Cambridgeshire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orwell is a small rural village outside Cambridge in SouthCambridgeshire, England. The village has an average population of 3,000 people to which is served by a Village Shop & Post Office, Primary School and a modern Local Pub / Restaurant.
The St. Andrews Church in the centre of the village can be seen from miles around on the side of the hills, to which from Royston at night it can be seen in all its traditional glory with the lights lighting up its spectacular features.
The Village is set next to the A603 (from Bedford, Bedfordshire to Cambridge). Behind the village is also an old excavation site, named locally as 'the clunch pit'. Here, people can find wild flowers and sheep grazing, along with the spectacular views over the South Cambridgeshire and bordering Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire landscape, as the pit places you a couple hundred feet above the village below.
The "Chequers", a long standing local pub (once called the flowers) and now owned by the 'punch group', is a contempary bar and lounge with a comfortable restaurant layout and 'local snug' is the perfect place to go on the summer days, as the building keeps the inside cool - and the beer cooler and during the winter, the open roaring fires keep that traditional feeling going, keeping your toes warm while you catch up with friends.
The village also hosts a holticultural event each summer and becomes the main 'hub' of activity on halloween, as all the other nearing villages children gather to do their traditional 'trick or treat' rounds; naturally, this evening is fun, as most people taking part do so with good intent.
