Ortley, Oregon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ortley is a former town in Wasco County, Oregon, USA, originally developed by the Hood River Orchard & Land Company which filed a plat for the townsite in 1911, naming it for the Ortley, a variety of apple. The company sold town lots and small orchard parcels, and the town quickly grew to a population of 300, and included a post office, several shops and a hotel. The land proved so unsuitable for apple production because of the prevailing high winds, and scarcity of water, that by 1922, the town all but abandoned, the post office was closed.

The town site is located at 45°39′22″N, 121°17′12.98″W (45.656110, -121.286940)[1], atop Sevenmile Hill nine miles West of The Dalles on the old state highway which used to connect that city and Mosier.
