Ortega Neighborhood
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ortega is an historic neighborhood of giant oak trees, waterfront mansions, and parks located on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida.
Ortega is bordered on the west by the St. Johns River, the Cedar River on the south, and the Ortega River on the east. Ortega was an inland island at one time but is currently a peninsula connected by a land bridge section of US Highway 17. The East side of the island is referred to as "Old Ortega" while the later constructed west side is referred to as "Ortega Forrest." Most of the “island” is almost exclusively residential with the exception of a small commercial square in Old Ortega. The area is also home to the historic and exclusive Timuquana Country Club and the Florida Yacht Club and is marked by a distinctly traditional southern culture complete with one of the south's most exclusive debutante coteries.
