[edit] Plot
Victoria Cope's mother has suddenly taken ill and seems to gain more and more weight everyday. Will she survive through the hot exhausting summer? Meanwhile, her father is putting orders in for a home boy at Barnardo's in Peterborough. They end with a young girl named Marianna, or as Victoria calls her Mary Anna Wilson. Something seems to be distracting Marianna and one night Victoria wakes up and finds Marianna in the barn with her younger brother, Jasper, who had escaped the harshness of a man from across the town. Victoria helps Marianna clean up Jasper's cuts and finally... show him to her parents. Will they accept Jasper into the household, send him back to the mean, old man, or will the man get enough information and come looking for Jasper himself? And Victoria's brother isn't doing any help, he is just becoming snottier every day...
