[edit] History

If orkut was launched on 22 jan 2004, why only 30 jan 2007 (not 22) it has a doodle-like logo celebrating it's 3rd anniversary? 201.72.160.176 19:03, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I had read in a local newspaper sometime back that the founder wanted to find his old lost love. So he designed Orkut so that everyone could keep in touch with their loved ones... Can anyone confirm this statement???? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fayazbhai (talk • contribs) 04:09, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Popularity in brazil

1. Taking third party(alexa) information is always better than first party(orkut) or second party(myspace). 2. major problem with orkut data is: default country selected while registering is US. many users dont bother to cahnge, hence US users will be exaggerated 3. orkut wants to gain popularity in US, hence it has further link in their US data. 4. alexa says current visits against registered users stated by orkut. hence alexa is better. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vinay412 (talk • contribs) 06:08, 26 February 2007 (UTC). [edit] user manipulating

user:huntscorpio seem to be manipulating page since long as seen in history.

1. a data on % of users is of least significance for a new visitor to this page and he is updating that daily, which is completely unnecessary. and it should be stopped immediately. i think last digit of percentage of users is completely unnecessary for an encyclopedia user.

2. i have added extra data (from alexa, see popularity in brazil discussion). and did not delete any existing data. he is not allowing to do even that, though im not deleting any of his data. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinay412 (talk • contribs)

Keep the articles talk page for relevant topics. Not for launching personal attacks. Just refine your English bro while you are here. Its difficult to understand what you are saying as it is. As for your 'manipulating' its called updating. The last digit of the percentage is not important? who says? Try multiplying 1000000 users with 0.01 percent. It would be around 10000 users difference. Understand why it is relevant? It is not point of what you are adding or deleting. Its just a point of relevance and making sure that the article doesn't sound like an advertising banner. And again leave all your comment signed using the ~~~~. And if you want to talk about history and contributions just look at your contributions. All you ever did after joining Wikipedia was to add the alexa part and kept on reverting others edits. — Huntscorpio (talk contribs count) 16:39, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

its % that matters, not absolute figures(very common sense that you lack). so 0.01% is nothing but 0. if i say something about you its confined to this perticular article, hence i posted it here.03:51, 28 February 2007 (UTC)—Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinay412 (talk • contribs)

your comment "And if you want to talk about history and contributions just look at your contributions" is personal attack which is not at all related to orkut. kindly take it back(delete it) Vinay412 04:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Just see yourself talking :P you quarrel like kid(which is what you are). Common sense is not so common you see. If what you are doing is common sense then I'm better off without it. I'm not reverting your edit because atleast one of us should show some maturity. When I first added the demographic data to orkut I rounded-off the percentage to one decimal place. Some wise soul decided that we need more precision and updated it to two decimal places. I did not revert nor changed that format because thats the format in which it was available on orkut. So I think that it is more accurate rather than we rounding it off. Since then I have been simply updating. And regarding your 'personal attacks' - What goes around, comes around bro. Nobody's gonna remove anything. — Huntscorpio (talk contribs count) 18:14, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
i striked out personal comments. and this topic has not yet reached consensus as you are continuing updating everyday. if you continue "unnecessary updating" - donno if its in policies, but its common sense, i will have to revert your changes. thanks. Vinay412 03:55, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Sup kid? :D you are using talk pages for experimenting now? There is always the sandbox to try out the strikeout option. Wikipedia does not run on common sense. It runs on the basic wheels called policies that a have a general agreement of the Admins, Sysops and editors. Any reversion you do, I'll consider them vandalism from now on and report. — Huntscorpio (talk contribs count) 16:36, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey guys, let's try and be nice here. I know neither of you agree, but there is no need for personal attacks. Discussions about disagreements are much nicer if everyone is civil, which I'm sure both sides could be a little bit more of. If you try explaining your feelings for your edits calmly and rationally, before you edit the page, this won't turn into an edit war, which makes things better for everyone. -- Natalya 01:03, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

no cooling down is necessary, plz post your opinion - is it necessary to update last decimal places daily? is it relevant? everyone wheck if any other data he manipulated, my watchlist is overflowing. and why does he starts preaching about wiki, if i strike out his wiki lectures also then there will be no reply at all :P Vinay412 05:06, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Dude it was fun for one or two days but now its getting pretty serious. I do not want a serious altercation here. Ultimately what both of us want is a better article. So seriously think before you post or do something okay? Thats all I ask. And write all you want but DO NOT change my comments or strike them out. I'm not going waste time on this silly thing thats going on here. I have better things to do. So long... — Huntscorpio (talk contribs count) 06:38, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unfounded statement

Majority of educated Indians believe that Orkut digital social network should be moderated heavily in a place where people lack the maturity and misuse its facilities.

No one has the right to make such a statement without a strong backing of facts and figures. I have changed the begining of the line to:

Some Indians believe that... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 61.1.69.223 (talk) 15:17, 12 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Terms of Service link

I can understand that Wikipedians may be suspicious of new external links as Wikipedia spam is a real problem. However, the WikiSummaries summary of the Orkut TOS adds benefit to Wikipedians wishing to know more about their rights regarding the service; it covers information which is typically outside of the scope of Wikipedia articles. Further, if the scope of Wikipedia's Orkut article were to change, the WikiSummaries document is provided under the GNU FDL and is therefore compatible to have information from it incorporated into Wikipedia. [edit] Unreliable

The Orkut entry (as of 11:54 am PDT 3/26/07) is ridiculously badly written and organized and flouts the NPOV policy right and left. Is there a way to flag this entry as "unreliable" or "challenged as to its accuracy"? Wroush 18:55, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree to this Wroush... Do we have a "unreliable" tag? Mugunth 06:03, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orkut Star of Authenticity

Any thoughts on this. Is this given by orkut to any one who claims to be star or is it given by orkut on some payment by the celebrity? Srikanth \talk \contribs 16:24, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Added essay tag.

This article does not cite the sources properly, Hence I've added the tag {{Essay-entry}} Please give your comments on that. I also added another tag, {{more sources}} as a lot of entries here are either original research or a personal view of the author on Orkut. Please help wikipedia by correcting them. [edit] Brushup

A few tidbits of this article seemed a bit... chatty. I cleaned it up a bit. Revert if thou wish, but the one-sentence-per-line thing was killing me... - Daisen¡i 14:51, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Additions to the first paragraph

Something like in Facebook's first paragraph. Refer to history diffs.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Orkut UnderConstruction.jpg

Image:Orkut UnderConstruction.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Number of Users?

Number of users? "As of 9th April, 2007, the number of members was over 49 million[citation needed]." On the About Orkut page: [[1]]

"In fact, orkut's top 50 communities, with more than 37 million total members and nearly 1.3 million daily visitors, have no illegal content whatsoever."

That is the top 50 only, but that's still a difference of 12 million.

[edit] What a mess~

I've removed huge amounts of suspicious unsourced info, but the article is still a total trainwreck and needs a serious overhaul... wikipediatrix 03:24, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Exaggerated Claim

"Orkut goes a step further by permitting the creation of easy-to-set-up simple forums (called "communities") of users."... how is this any different than Facebook groups or Myspace groups. It's the same thing, just a different name. Users can creat groups which have "simple forums" among other things.

[edit] cleanup tag

The article suffers from a lot of OR and POV contents. May be I'll cleanup when I get time.. Meanwhile, be bold and edit it yourself... Mugunth 18:11, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

The figure of 67 million users is not sourced, and the only sources that cite that figure that I can find on a cursory Google search are blogs that link back to Wikipedia. 130.70.97.246 16:28, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] orkut application's

Orkut applications started appearing on user's profile from 16th april 2008 as clearly listed on official orkut blog also. and started with 18 applications and then later on more apps are added. anantshri (talk) 18:54, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Do we really need to put something like the best application ever thing's in wikipedia, i think it hurt's its neutrality. removing the edit by previous poster claiming blood search as the best application. anantshri (talk) 19:39, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] India

Why is it not mentioned that Orkut has signed a deal with the Indian Police to arrest those who post anti-Shivaji/Anti-Bal Thakaray stuff? it was all over the papers, and several guys got arrested from Bangalore, Delhi, et all. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 09:10, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Nomination time!

I am a regular user of Orkut, and can vouch for the accuracy of content in the article (which of course, doesn't count!). But, except for the recent events (which will not remain recent in a fast-moving world), all other facts are supported well by facts. So, I believe some of the matter (particularly pertaining to various episodes of hacking or virus-spread) is unrequired that could be dealt with in a different article, say, "important incidents related to Orkut"

Most importantly, it is a well-written and an excellent article.

I'm planning to nominate it for a good article, at least, if no one does that in a few days. It has all the potential to become a featured article, and deserves to be one considering the currency of the topic.

Regards.
