At 179 km in length, the Orkla is the longest river in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The river follows the Orkladal valley, discharging into the Orkdalsfjord at the village Orkanger. It originates in the lake Orkelsjøen in Oppdal municipality and runs through the municipalities of Tynset, Rennebu, Meldal and Orkdal.
The Orkla is a popular river for salmon fishing, a famous fisherman there being former Liverpool player Vegard Heggem.
The river is regulated by five power generation reservoirs, which were built in the years 1978-1985.
[edit] The name
The Old Norse form of the name was just Ork (still found in the name Orkdal). The meaning of the name is unknown (maybe derived from the verb orka 'to work'). The name Orkla originally belonged to the uppermost part of the river (lying in Tynset, Hedmark), and the meaning of this name is maybe 'the small part of (the river) Ork'.
