Orkanger
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orkanger is a small town in the municipality of Orkdal, Norway, located at the tip of Orkdalsfjorden. Combined with Fannrem it constitutes the biggest town of Sør-Trøndelag county outside of Trondheim, the county capital. Orkanger is Orkdal's political and commercial centre.
The surrounding area used to be a separate municipality, which was separated from Orkdal on July 1, 1920 but reunited January 1, 1963. Just north of Orklanger lays the port of Thamshavn. Until 1974 Orkanger had a station on the Thamshavnbanen railway, and between 1908 and 1949 there was a steam ship service to Trondheim with D/S Orkla
"Orkanger" is comprised of the name "Ork", stemming from Orkelsjøen (Orkel lake) from which the river Orkla runs, and "anger" of the Old Norse meaning "narrow (fjord)".
