[edit] History

The 1777 Battle of Oriskany, during the American Revolution, was fought near this village. The location is marked by the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site.

The village was founded in 1811. The Erie Canal passed through the village until it was re-routed during the 19th Century. It was said that this was done partly in order to level the playing field with the village of Oriskany Falls, also of Oneida County, who had often complained not only about the similarity in town names, but also because of the historical importance of the Battle of Oriskany. Not having such an influential event in their history, Oriskany Falls were often contemptuous of their neighbors, some say out of jealousy. They instituted an annual prank against Oriskany (although they made sure never to hold it on quite the same day), which caused great controversy when they defaced the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site in 1832. Conflict over this became bitter, even physical at times, so the Erie Canal solution was proposed and accepted by both sides. Luckily the Canal was looking to change its route at the time anyway.
