Orion (仙術超攻殻オリオン Senjutsu Chōkōkaku Orion?) is a science fiction/fantasy manga by Masamune Shirow, first published in 1991 by Seishinsha.
[edit] Plot
The magic/technology described in the story draws upon ideas from Buddhism, Taoism, ancient Japanese myth and particle physics, with a heavy dose of Shirow's wild imagination. The main plot revolves around the Yamato Empire's plan to destroy all the galaxy's negative karma using a massive technological reactor. Unfortunately, negative karma cannot simply be destroyed, it must be atoned for. Therefore, the magical device merely serves to focus the negative energy into one location, where it forms a nine-headed dragon. A dissident priest manages to summon Susano, God of Destruction (bottom of cover image to right) to combat the beast. However, the priest's sorceress daughter, Seska (center of cover image to right), is possessed by negative energy and becomes a megalomaniacal mastermind opposing Susano. The final pages reveal that the entire story takes place in Earth's prehistory, all signs of the Yamato Empire civilization having been obliterated by the battle. In addition, the remnants of the nine-headed dragon slumber beneath the Pacific Ocean, awaiting the chance to rise again.
