[edit] Plot synopsis

[edit] Summary

Angel refuses to help a couple, the Reilly’s, who are seeking help from Wolfram & Hart about their son's supernatural abilities when Angel realizes that the boy is actually his son, Connor, for whom Angel struck a deal with the unseen Senior Partners (at the end of season 4) to have all his memories of Angel and the gang erased. Angel finds out that an elderly and powerful demon sorcerer, named Cvyus Vail, is responsible and the one who created Connor’s new memories. Vail demands that Connor must slay the demon warrior Sahjhan (imprisoned in his urn since episode "Forgiving" in Season 3) which is foretold in an ancient prophecy.

Meanwhile, Wesley continues to study Illyria and her super abilities with Spike, who serves as Illyria's "punching bag".

Also, Gunn is still trapped in the suburban hell dimension unable to know where he is until Marcus Hamilton, the new liaison to the Senior Partners, shows up and offers a deal out for his soul. But Gunn does not listen this time.

[edit] Expanded overview

At the beginning of the episode, a troubled couple comes in telling a story about their son: a truck had hit their son hard...and not only is he still alive but he suffered not a single scratch from the accident. They were referred to Wolfram and Hart because of their specialty in the paranormal.

To Wesley's confusion, Angel refuses to take on the case, because the boy in question is Connor, Angel's son with no memory of Angel. Connor, who now lives a normal life...except for this little glitch. Connor, who now is in college at Stanford.

Turned away, Connor and his parents go home in their car, until they are attacked by demons. Angel comes to their rescue, and says that he and Connor need to talk. Angel also learns from Hamilton that the Senior Partners are not behind this.

Angel and Connor go back to Wolfram & Hart, where Connor meets some of Angel's colleagues. Wesley learns that the demons that attacked Connor were working for Cyvus Vail, an incredibly powerful demon, and Angel goes and pays him a visit.

Angel, however, is blackmailed when he learns that Cyvus Vail is the one responsible for Connor's new life. He erased everyone's memories of Connor and created new ones for him so that he could live a normal life. Vail conjures a box stating that it is an Olan window, allowing people to see things as they once were. If it is smashed, anyone in the vicinity would get their old memories back. Vail wants Connor to kill Sahjahn, a demon who has been prophesied to kill Vail. It has also been prophesied that Connor is the one who will defeat Sahjahn. Angel, having no choice, agrees.

Wesley is shocked that Angel is even considering this, and tells him that records show that a large spell was performed by Vail the day they took over Wolfram and Hart. Angel tells Wesley it needs to be done and that Connor is special and he can do this. Connor and Angel go off to practice some fighting before going to Vail's home.

Meanwhile Gunn is being tortured and Marcus Hamilton pays him a visit and offers a deal, before Hamilton can finish offering the deal Gunn refuses and takes back the necklace which removes his memories again and resumes the torture.

Meanwhile, Wesley and Illyria are in the archives searching for the reason behind the spell. He realizes that reality had been changed and Illyria states that some of Fred's memories had been altered. He then finds the contract and realizes what has happened.

Meanwhile at Vail's, Connor is fighting Sahjahn and Wesley and Illyria show up to confront Angel. Wesley somehow managed to get the memory box from Cyvus Vail — who seems frozen in time by Illyria — and demands to know what is going on. Angel tells them that Connor is his son and asks him to put the box down. Wesley is angry, demanding to know if Fred was the price that Angel paid for his son. Angel tells them it wasn't and asks him to hand over the box of memories and to trust him. Wesley replies that he can't and smashes the memory box.

Remembering his fighting abilities, Connor promptly defeats Sahjahn. He doesn't however, change into the old homicidal Connor. He still seems to be the put together college student that he was. In fact, he gives no indication that he has gotten his memory back except for the "look" in his eyes that he always had when fighting demons. When they return to Wolfram and Hart, Connor says that he is taking his parents home because this is not their world and you do what you need to do when it comes to family. As he is leaving he turns and looking Angel in the eye says, "I learned that from my father". Connor proceeds toward the elevator and takes one last look at Angel before the doors close. Meanwhile Wesley is upset that smashing the memory box didn't restore Fred, but only the memories of his betrayal of Angel and exile from his friends. Regardless, he knows that he is better off knowing the truth but focuses on the new memories to help him endure the pain of his old ones.

Wikiquote has a collection of quotations related to:

Wesley: Illyria can be... difficult. Testing her might be hard without getting someone seriously hurt. Angel: We'll make Spike do it.

Hamilton: Let's be clear about this. Things run differently now. I'm not a little girl. You and I won't be making love on this couch any time soon. (walks away) Now, with that in mind, how can I help you?
