Maximum Ride is a book series by James Patterson and published by Little, Brown. The series is set in the near future, and centers around the 'Flock', a group of human-avian hybrids on the run from the scientists who created them. There are three books in the series so far: The Angel Experiment (2005) which was a New York Times Bestseller for 12 weeks, and School's Out Forever (2006). The third book in the series, Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, was released in May 2007 [1].
The series is similar to When the Wind Blows and The Lake House.
[edit] The School
The brainchild of deranged geneticist Roland ter Borcht, the School is the birthplace of the Flock, the Erasers, and countless other genetic experiments of dubious morality. The School serves as a laboratory of Nazi-esque proportions, where cruel experiments on the genetically-altered humans are not only allowed, but encouraged by the scientists inside.
Since the Flock's escape from the School, the School has relentlessly tracked the Flock.
The School is located in Death Valley, California.
[edit] The Institute For Higher Living
An extension of the School, the Institute For Higher Living is another hub of morally dubious genetic experimentation. The Institute's archives store most of the paperwork for both the School and the Institute, including information on the origins of the Flock.
The Institute is located in New York City.
An actual website for the Institute has been found, however, one is required to enter a username and password, so it is inaccessible.
[edit] Itex
A mega-corporation that controls most of the world, via a smattering of satellites and dummy companies. It makes many products, from the test tubes in the labs of The School, to the baby formula that Angel had when she was a baby to jeans that the Gasman wears. It is thought that the flock were created to survive a nuclear Armageddon, probably instigated by this company. Itex is comparibale to Weapon X in the Marvel Universe and The Company in Heroes.
