All About Me

My name is Kate. I'm still kind of new to Wikipedia so please be patient with me. I'm a recent college graduate, with a BA in Humanities. My focus area was speech communications, and my minor was Spanish.

My Interests

A friend of mine recently introduced me to Wikipedia, and I have to admit, I'm hooked! I've found it to be a great information resource. In my wanderings, however, I've noticed many things I'd like to know more about that don't have Wikipedia articles, so I'm gradually doing some outside research and adding them myself! I'm also known to my friends as being a stickler for correct grammar and spelling, so I make minor edits whenever I see those kind of mistakes, too. I check recent changes a lot but don't do enough there to call myself an RC patroller yet. Finally, I'm a big fan of internal links, so when I'm on a page that makes reference to another related topic, but doesn't actually link to it, I often add the appropriate internal links. I figure, if I'm wanting to know more about it enough to search for it, then maybe I should link those things and save time for those after me with similar levels of curiosity. ;) Oh, and I tend to fix links to disambiguation pages and wikify dates, too.

Other than Wikipedia, I have a major obsession with shoes. Not so much the buying and/or wearing of them (although I love that too!) but the background behind them as well. I'm fascinated by trends, why certain styles are popular, the designers and how they got started, the characteristics that distinguish one brand from the other. As a result, I'm guessing many of my Wikipedia contributions, at least to begin with, will be quite shoe- and fashion-oriented.

When I'm not online, I love to take photos and scrapbook. I also love to travel. I was fortunate to be involved with my college media department and attend several conferences in Las Vegas and New York City. Such opportunities taught me both the value of networking with others in similar occupations as well as developing my love of exploring new places. I'm also a huge fan of blogging ... if you'd like, check out my blog at http://oregongirl82.blogspot.com.

Articles

Written or Contributed to

  • Solestruck - Solestruck.com is an online shoe company I discovered one day when surfing the net for a new pair of tennis shoes. I was impressed with their customer service when I placed an order with them and wanted to learn more about how the company started and what they're all about. When my Wikipedia search yielded no results, I took the matter into my own hands and wrote an article. This is my very first contribution to Wikipedia, so I'd appreciate any input or advice anyone has to give!
  • Kenneth Cole (designer) - Kenneth Cole is one of my favorite shoe designers. I knew the story of the company's beginning from their official website and other research, and when I checked Wikipedia to see if they had any more information, I saw it didn't have much. So I added what I knew.
  • Gladstone, Oregon - I used to live here! I added some names to an incomplete list, and made some minor changes in punctuation.
  • Tammy movies and Leslie Nielsen - I came across these pages when reading about Debbie Reynolds. I noticed that although both of these pages mention the other, they didn't actually link to each other so I made some new internal links. I also saw that Tammy and the Bachelor wasn't listed in Leslie Nielsen's filmography although it's referenced elsewhere in the article, so I added that as well.
  • Persona non grata - Just added an internal link (Oliver Stone, who made a movie under this title, was referenced on this page but not actually linked to).
  • Camper - I came across this disambiguation page when searching for information on a shoe brand called Camper. I made some small changes to the page, mostly just grammar.
  • Tim Storms - This article is about the record holder for the lowest bass note produced by a human (two octaves below the lowest B on a piano!). I actually had the opportunity to hear him perform live when he was singing with the Oregon-based a cappella group Rescue. His version of Amazing Grace was just ... amazing! Anyway, when I found this article, it had basically been copied and pasted from one of the external links it cited (plagarism is wrong, people). So I rewrote the article, added headers, found some more information to add from other sources, and added references and more external links.
  • Outside In - I stumbled across this page when I started as a member of WikiProject Oregon. I thought it sounded like a great organization so I did some research to find out more about it and ended up adding some info to the page about Elliott Smith's family donating some of the proceeds from his compilation album New Moon to the organization because he was from Portland also, and he'd wanted to work with Outside In but he died before getting the chance.
