Oren van Gerp (b. 1937) is an American philanthropist and scion of the prominent van Gerp family of industrialists. Born and raised in Lancaster, PA, van Gerp opted not to continue his family's business, but rather chose to use his inherited wealth to support a number of charitable pursuits. Most notably, he has contributed a great deal of money to fund efforts to find a cure for sickle cell anemia. He has also been a vocal supporter of efforts to increase international awareness of the exploitation of child soldiers in Africa, Asia, and South America.
Despite the fact that in the 1942 his father mounted an unsuccessful campaign to represent the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the United States Senate, Oren van Gerp has - to date - not betrayed any political aspirations. Currently, van Gerp divides his time between New York City and Europe, where he maintains several estates.
Oren van Gerp is also the name of a Gilded Age vice-presidential hopeful famously disparaged in the 1892 election as the Rapscallion of Rochester. Van Gerp advocated a silver standard and high tariffs, and today devotes much of his time to the writing of emails that rub people the wrong way.
