There are two distinct orders of knighthood that bear the name of Saint James:
- Military Order of Saint James of Compostela, also known as the Military Order of Santiago, is a catholic chivalric order and monarchical order founded in 1170 by king Alphonse VIII of Castile in Castile, and incorporated into the Spanish honor system in 1525
- Royal Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, also known as the Order of Saint James of the Sword, was a catholic chivalric order, founded in 1290 in Portugal as a split off of the Spanish order, until 1789 when it was changed to a secular order of merit and renamed Military Order of Saint James of the Sword
