[edit] Structure and background
The Order has many branches around the country; each one is presided over by the Council of the Catholic Church. The New York Branch of the Order is headed by Sister Kate Valentine and Father Ewan Remington, who lead the fight against the forces of darkness.
The Order has many members; however, in times of great crisis, other less generally accepted individuals may be introduced into the Order to help fight the forces of darkness. One of these such characters is Chrono, a devil who originally fought with Aion to destroy the world, but who has given up his dark past to fight for justice. His partner is Rosette Christopher, a girl who lost her brother, Joshua Christopher, to Aion in order to gain power. She has pledged her life to save him with the aid of Chrono. Together, they help out at the Order of Magdalene in the battle against Aion. The order also occasionally gives shelter to those who are being hunted, such as the Apostle Azmaria Hendric.
[edit] Members of the Order of Magdalene
- Sister Kate Valentine - head of the New York branch of the Order of Magdalene, although Father Remington seems to help out a lot. She cares very much for Rosette, although it isn't very obvious because she often gets angry at Rosette for her frequent mishaps (i.e. the destruction of numerous vehicles and buildings). While she is distrustful of Chrono, she tolerates him because she knows how much he cares for Rosette.
- Father Ewan Remington - the second in command who helps Sister Kate run the New York branch of the Order of Magdalene. He is the one who brought Rosette and Chrono into the Order of Magdalene four years before. He serves as a father figure and guardian to Rosette and tends to be overprotective of her.
- The Elder (Edward Hamilton) - a scientist at the Magdalene Order who is in charge of weapons development. Though perverted, he is a valuable asset to everyone at the Order. He especially cares for Rosette and Chrno, hoping they don't repeat the mistakes of the past.
- Sister Rosette Christopher - is a brash and determined member of the Order, as well as the protagonist of the story. Although she is committed to her job as an exorcist, her ultimate goal is to reunite with her brother Joshua and to bring Aion (the demon responsible for separating them) to justice. In order to do so, she makes a contract with Chrono, an ex-cohort of Aion's. She is optimistic (although she occasionally opens up to Chrono) and determined to reach her goal in the short time that she has left.
- Chrono/Chrno - a demon who once fought for Aion's cause. He is also referred to as "Chrono of the Broken Horns" because he has none since Aion broke them off during a duel, and simply "the Sinner", which is the name for the demons who participated in Aion's pursuit of freedom. Because Chrono has no horns, which are the demons' source of astral energy and the demons' life force, he must rely on a human "contractor", feeding off his or her soul as a source of the energy. Because of this, contractors typically die young. Chrono has only had two contractors: Mary Magdalene, who was also his first love; and Rosette Christopher, his current contractor. He cares deeply for Rosette and will often go into a blind rage if anything happens to her.
[edit] Historical comparison
Mary Magdalene, a disciple of Jesus, was a popular figure in the Middle Ages. A religious Order of Madalene was established in Naples in 1324, and eventually other cities. The order consisted of a community of nuns who were generally reformed prostitutes, sometimes referred to as Magdalenettes.[1]
