Order of Heptasophs

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of Heptasophs is a Fraternal Organization established in the New Orleans, Louisiana in April 1852. The name is derived from Latin roots meaning seven and wise and is interpreted as the seven wise men. The Seven Wise Men according to H. W. Burton were Thales, of Miletus; Solon, of Athens; Bias, of Priene; Chilo, of Sparta; Pitticus, of Mitylene; Cleobulus, of Rhodes; and Epimenides, of Crete. According to Axelrod, there may have been predecessor organizations dating back as far as 1837.

In 1878, the Improved Order of Heptasophs (IOH) split off in a dispute over offering members mutual aid.
