Orbix Xaxis is a fictional character in the Edge Chronicles series of fantasy novels, created by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. He appears in the "Rook Barkwater" sequence, a sub-series in the canon.
Orbix is known as the Most High Guardian of Night. He is a hypochondriac, and wears thick smoked glasses and a muzzle with an air filter to protect him from the impurities of the world. He overthrew Vox Verlix, and commands the fortress school, the Tower of Night, on New Sanctaphrax. As a sky-scholar, he believes that the lightning bolt of a Great Storm would heal the new Sanctaphrax rock, which was crumbling from stone-sickness. When a storm did arrive, however, he was not ready. His ex-assistant, Xanth Filatine, had stolen the deadbolt that would hold the lightning conductor Midnight's Spike in place. Instead, he used himself to attract the sacred lightning bolt. The result was that the Tower of Night burst into flame, he and his Guardians were annihilated, and the rock melted.
In Freeglader, he and a legion of Guardians appear in spirit form when Rook searches for Xanth in the Twilight Woods, although this is a Phantasm-dream of the Edgelands.
In The Winter Knights, a character named Daxiel Xaxis is the captain of the gatekeepers of The Knights Academy. It is possible that Orbix is one of Daxiel's descendants.
