Orathanad, also known by Muthaambal Sathiram, is a taluka in Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The city was ruled by nayakars early days. The Queen Muthambaal got treasure from the pond by sacrificed her life. With that treasure the king made more than 40 "Anna Sathira" in orathanad taluk.

Orathanad is located at 10.8° N 79.15°E. It has an average elevation of 2 metres (6 feet). The city lies on the south bank of the Kaveri River, 223 miles south of Chennai.
The extension areas include Oorachi, Pudhur, R.V.Nagar, B.ed College. The total population of the composite city touches 50,000 (unofficial figure).

Ethnically most of the people are Tamils. There is also a large Telugu population along with Saurashtrians and Thanjavur Marathi people. The total population of the composite city touches 50,000 Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Orathanad has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 80%.

There is a famous Siva temple in Orathanad. Those who are not able to visit kasi in North India can have a Dharsan of Kasi Viswanathar and Kasi Visalakshi Amman at Orathanad town itself, Since the main deity in this temple is Kasi Visalakshi amman and Kasi Viswanathar.
There is one more Vinayagar Temple near by Padikulam which is very very powerful temple. This temple is maintaining by Ganesa Kurukkal who got Best kurukkal award from Lions Club. White revolution is well implemented in Orathanad Taluk. There is one big livestock farm in Orathanad town itself and another big one is in Eachankottai village More than 100 acres of land has been acquired for these two livestock farms and this two farms are the model of the one big livestock farm in Hosur. Research and development is being experimented in Eachankottai by-breed livestock farm. There is one survey training Institute in Orathanad Town. It is one and the only training institute in the State which impart survey training to the Revenue Officials and Survey Officials. There is an old type of two-tier river bridge in Vettikadu village of Orathanad Taluk. It is a telling performance of old architecture. C.M.B. Canal is running over the first-tier and underneath " Kattaru" river is flowing in the second -tier. It may be the first type of two -tier bridge in tamilnadu State. KannanthanGudi is a village which is located 2 km from orathanad. In that Village "Malaieriyamman Chitirai Utsavam " is famous festival which is celebrated on Every year may month.. Eachankottai is a village which is located 9 km from orathanad, 15km from Thanjavur is an important centre for surrounding small villages. It is the important road junction for proceeding towards Orathnadu, Vettikadu,Thanjavur via K.Pudur, Thanjavur via Marungulam is located here. It has a Govt. Higher Sec School, which is the first of its kind in the radius of 15km, which takes its pride of producing many important professionals and leaders to country.
