Oranmore (Irish: Órán Mór) is a suburban village in County Galway on the outskirts of Galway city in Ireland. With its major housing developments, Oranmore is rapidly becoming a part of Galway's commuter or suburban belt. In 2004 Oranmore was listed as one of the communities with the highest per capita incomes in Ireland[citation needed].


Also home to a very famous Irish poet named Ciaran Sweeney. His house still stands in Maree next to the new community centre.

Oranmore is situated 11 km (7miles) East of Galway City on the edge of Oranmore Bay, an inlet of Galway Bay.

The focus of local industry has recently shifted from primarily dairy agriculture to tourism, manufacturing and logistics, and there are several industrial parks located near the village.Such as Deerpark Industrial Estate.

  • Oranmore railway station opened on 1 August 1851 and finally closed on 17 June 1963.[1]
  • Bus Eireann, Citylink and Nestor Bus services through Oranmore serve Galway, Dublin, Cork and Dublin and Shannon Airports.
  • Oranmore village is located where the N6 from Galway to Dublin and the N18/N20 from Galway to Limerick and Cork separate.

  • Joseph Henry Blake, nobleman and socialist, grew up on a nearby estate in Treanlaur, Maree.
  • Thomas Redington, Irish politician, born here.
  • Joe Howley, Irishman involved in the struggle for Irish Independence, was killed by the British in December 1920. A statue stands in Oranmore in his honor.
