Oral medicine is the dental speciality placed at the interface between both medicine and dentistry. It is concerned with diagnosis and non-surgical management of medical pathology affecting the oral and maxillofacial region.

Many Oral Medicine specialists have dual qualification with both medical and dental degrees. The speciality is relatively small and can be considered for the large part a tertiary referral service. Currently there are 15 units in the United Kingdom, mainly based within the dental teaching hospitals with 32 Consultants at present.
