[edit] Tilman Hausherr merge

It has been suggested and seconded that we merge Tilman Hausherr here, to Opposition to cults and new religious movements. His only notability, and there is not much RS to support it, is that he is a critic of Scientology. As far as software, authors of minor (and most major) software are not notable simply for that and are not included here. While "this one doesn't have an article" arguments are not really valid, it has been mentioned already that Irfan Skiljan, author of IrfanView, one of the most popular Windows freeware programs ever developed, does not have a bio here. --Justanother 14:04, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Oppose. Pretty ludicrous suggestion, if you ask me. Has there ever been an actor merged to Acting? Has there ever been a lawyer merged to Law? This suggestion seems to be nothing but a way to do an end-run around the failed AfDs where this supposed lack of notability and the supposed lack of RS supporting it was already examined. -- Antaeus Feldspar 14:50, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Thanks for your input. I think a mention of Tilman and other marginally notable/non-notable (take your pick) cult-fighters is appropriate in the article. I see plenty of articles that mention people that do not deserve a separate bio. --Justanother 14:58, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
      • I can't help noticing that you are still referring to your talking point of 'Tilman is not notable enough for an article' as if it were self-obvious, rather than a point examined and rejected in two AfDs. -- Antaeus Feldspar 01:46, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Oppose - reduces usefulness of encyclopedia to interested readers - David Gerard 15:26, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Support merge - Guess I should vote. I just don't think that he is sufficiently notable for a separate article and this way he still has a mention and a redirect to here would be placed in his article so people could still search for him. --Justanother 15:31, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Comment (because of obvious CoI). I admire Irfan Skiljan. He's a great guy. He should get an article on wikipedia. I have used his software for 10 years. I registered it in 1997, i.e. I paid him. I made some suggestions that he implemented. A possible reason that I have an article and he doesn't, is because I'm active in two fields (software and cult criticism). However I wouldn't consider myself "worthy" in this "opposition" definition, since the are many really more important people, e.g. Steve Hassan, Rick Ross, etc. But anyway, there's no need to start a people section here. And finally, the whole suggestion by John smells of bad faith. --Tilman 20:59, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Who cares?Fossa?! 02:28, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
Hey Fossa, could you vote merge or oppose? Thanks John196920022001 11:43, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Yet another example of Justanother using disruptive tactics to whitewash criticism of the criminal and abusive cult of Scientology. Vivaldi (talk) 10:56, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Comment Personal dislikes have no place in a democratic, rational consensus finding group. Ask a friendly warden near you. Misou 05:21, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Merge- Tilman is only notable in the context of scientology - an entire article is not suited for a non-notable programmer (apart from the Xenu's link sleuth). His article also sports a Scientology template, which confirms his notability solely in the domain of Scientology. How many barely-notable programmers can we find that are critical of Scientology? Sfacets 11:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Have you heard of Computer Science professor David Touretzky? Do you think he should be moved here too? Vivaldi (talk) 11:57, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
    • No, he is notable outside the context of Scientology. Sfacets 12:22, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
    • If you dispute notability, then the right thing to do is an AfD. However you must bring new arguments. --Tilman 13:59, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
Merge John196920022001 16:31, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Tilman this is the last time I am going to ask you to stop making persona attacks on me. Why do you have to question my reason for wanting a merge? The same information can be added to the "Opposition" article. The information is retained. If I am correct, a redirect can be done so they can find the article with you mentioned in it. What is your problem? John196920022001 16:31, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Oppose - As per User:Vivaldi's edit summary: Tilman is also known for being a software author. No reason necessary for a merge. I believe this user [ User:John196920022001 ] is being disruptive. DIFF. Smee 19:56, 17 March 2007 (UTC).
  • Merge- His whole life's product seems to be a piece of software, available for free. As laid out earlier, there are ten thousands such people. Misou 21:10, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I looked at some of the policies about disruptive editing. I expalined my reasons earlier. "The same information can be added to the "Opposition" article. The information is retained. If I am correct, a redirect can be done so they can find the article with you mentioned in it." What about that is disruptive? Nothing lost, nothing gained. If a redirect from a search of Tilman Hausherr to Opposition to Cults can be done, what is so disruptive about that. Secondly I am learning that these responses to me reflect a violation of civility. Policy says: "If it is a clear case of ongoing incivility, consider making a comment on the offender's talk page." Since I am a newer member this is supposedly the way to handle, but you and Tilman have done nothing but publically accuse me of some kind of misrepresentation from the start. You are using policy as a personal attack. You and Tilman should know better John196920022001 02:40, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
    • It is clearly hard to WP:AGF when after a content dispute with me (in Steve Hassan), to suggest the move of the article about me to a completely different article, which has no people section yet, and where the subject of this article (me) is a rather minor person. Plus, the software section in my article does not apply to "Opposition to cults and new religious movements". --Tilman 07:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Now if you are done attacking me, do you have anyhing to say in rebuttal to the actual content?
        • I already did. --Tilman 04:35, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
          • Well Good! If you a "minor person" as you claim then the article should be definately moved to the "Opposition" article with a redirect from Tilman John196920022001 10:22, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
          • Don't misquote me. I am a minor person in the "cult opposition" (or raher, criticism) segment. Others are much more important.
          • Anyway, this article doesn't feature any people. So there is no need to start with me. Especially since it is unlikely that it would mention my software and usenet activities. I'd wish you would now stop this silly "revenge" attempt. --Tilman 20:29, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
            • Bing! WP:NPA once more. You used to do better. Juckt's? Misou 05:27, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
              • Criticizing the behaviour of someone is not a personal attack. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Misou (talkcontribs).
              • This "merge suggestion" is nothing move than revenge and harassment. And a waste of time. --Tilman 07:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
                • Second the notion that this is revenge/harassment - And highly inappropriate at that. Especially if the subject of the article, and a respected editor, has voiced it as such. This should stop now. Smee 07:08, 20 March 2007 (UTC).
                    • This is rediculous, Tilman. I would like you to explain right now how suggesting a merge with a redirect from Tilman is a revenge tactic? Nothing is lost. Secondly the Opposition article does feature people. Margaret Singer is one of those featured. John196920022001 15:41, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
                      • No, there is no people section. And seriously, I am no comparison to Margaret Singer. And as I said before, the software part would be irrelevant in that article. --Tilman 17:08, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Listed Tilman Hausherr for 3rd AFD

  • I have listed the article for a 3rd AFD, in order to solve this "Merge" debate. Please see: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tilman Hausherr (3rd nomination). Thanks. Smee 07:47, 20 March 2007 (UTC).
    • The result of the (3rd) AFD was Keep. This should close the discussion above, as many independent editors commented there that the article Tilman Hausherr should stand on its own. Thanks. Smee 15:42, 27 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Inaccessible sentence

I consider myself an individual of at least average intelligence, but this sentence boggled my mind: "Christianity itself, formed by the debates which gradually defined orthodoxy in contradistinction to the various heresies it eventually succeeded in stamping out, reached the point where it identified with the secular powers and gave short shrift to religious innovation." Can someone please make that easier to read or should I just move to the Wikipedia:Simple English Wikipedia. I think it says that Christianity went from a new religion facing opposition to one that opposed other new religions, but please, "contradistinction"? --SVTCobra 00:50, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "discrimination"

I deleted the "discrimination" footer bar, because "opposition" is not discrimination and nowhere in the article is spoken obout discrimination. I explained this clearly in edit summary, but was reverted twice without explanations. I find this quite insulting. `'Míkka 01:19, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
