One dictionary I consulted defined the sports-related use of the word "open" as a type of tournament in which both professionals and amateurs are able to qualify for competition. (cf. http://wordnet.princeton.edu)

Might this distinction be the basis of the perceived age distinction noted in the current wikipedia definition?
