In the 1999 Kargil Conflict between India and Pakistan, Operation Vijay (Victory in Hindi) was the name of the successful Indian operation to push back the infiltrators from the Kargil Sector. It is sometimes referred to as Operation Vijay Kargil.
The operation was initiated in late May, ending just before July end. The Pakistani irregulars and regular infiltrators, suffered a catastrophic defeat at the hands of the Indian armed forces. The lasting effect: Pakistan's military capability and striking power suffered severely. And India effectively became the dominant South Asian power (internationally accepted).
