From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Exercise Mainbrace was NATO's first large naval exercise, conducted over twelve days in September 1952. The exercise was designed by General Dwight D. Eisenhower to convince Denmark and Norway that those nations could be defended against attack from the Soviet Union. 80,000 men, 200 ships (including the battleship HMS Vanguard), and 1,000 aircraft participated in the manoeuvres. The exercise was commanded jointly by SACLANT Admiral Lynde D. McCormick and SACEUR Matthew B. Ridgeway.
