Operation Valfajr-4 (also known as Operation Dawn 4) was an Iranian Operation in Iraqi Kurdistan that took from 19 October 1983 to November that same year. At the end of the operation Iran had captured a small amount of territory from the Iraqis. Relative to other operations and battles of the Iran-Iraq war in Operation Valfajr-4 environmental conditions and operative restrictions where of high significance. Also the military medicine organization of the Pasdaran was important in this battle; they used special methods to save the wounded and carried out rescue operations.[1]
[edit] The Battle
After the Iraqis spent 2 months in their trenches waiting for the Iranians to attack on 19 October 1983 Iran finally striked. The Iranians hoped that the Kurdish help and the rough terrain would compensate for their material inferiority. The attack was successful but the Iranians suffered high casualties due to Iraqi poison gas attacks. The Iraqis used gas attacks as well during Operation Dawn 2 but then it backfired on them, this time they used it properly.[1]
