Opera South is a name used by multiple opera companies on different continents. Two are located in the United States and another in the United Kingdom.
[edit] The British company:
Specializing in staging lesser-known operas and based on the borders of Surrey, Hampshire, and West Sussex, the company was founded in 1984 as Opera Omnibus at Haslemere and was soon incorporated as a registered charity (1985) and limited company (1986). The company rebranded itself as Opera South in the first years of the 21st century. In 2005 the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra joined the company and plays at the fully staged productions. The company is currently presided over by Philip Langridge.
[edit] The American companies:
Specializing in quality works both classic and new, the American company OperaSouth, Inc. is located in metro Atlanta, Georgia in the southeastern United States. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit performing arts organization and was founded in 2006 in response to Atlanta's consistent tumultuous operatic offerings. This young and vigorous company offers fully staged and orchestrated operas, outreach, a dinner series called Edible Opera, and its acclaimed Opera Road Show. This company is currently presided over by young opera professionals.
Chartered in 1971 & located in Jackson, Mississippi, OPERA/SOUTH is a nonprofit opera company that aims to provide students with the opportunity to work in professional opera, to provide a showcase for young American artists and to introduce opera to new audiences. The company, which established a reputation among American opera companies, produced some 20 operas during the 1970s. Among them was A Bayou Legend by Mississippi native composer William Grant Still. The company also featured Ulysses Kay’s production of Jubilee, the book written by Mississippi historian and writer Margaret Walker Alexander.
