Opal Koboi is a fictional character in the Artemis Fowl series. She first appears as a villain in Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident, and later as the main antagonist and titular character in Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception.
[edit] Fictional character history
Prior to the events of the series, Opal set up business in opposition to her father, eventually putting him out of business. She then took over his business, incoporated it into her own and united her businesses under the banner "Koboi Laboratories".
Her somewhat sexist father subsequently had a nervous breakdown and went mad. Opal sent him to an asylum but not before recording his nervous breakdown on DVD for her own personal amusement. The extremely proud Opal also has a long-running grudge against Foaly the Centaur for winning an award which she wanted when they were students.
Opal was always adament that her intellect surpassed Foaly's and the only reason he won was because he was male. Opal's father's sexism along with her experience losing to Foaly seemed to cause her to develop deep misandrist tendencies.
[edit] Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident
Opal Koboi was a certified genius, with an IQ measuring over 300. She was the owner of "Koboi labs" , the company which made most of LEPrecon's equipment. However, she had specifically designed everything so that she could remotely sabotage them, resenting the fact that she felt as though she was always considered second-best to the LEP's technical expert Foaly for the simple reason that she was female. With the help of General Scalene of the B'wa Kell goblin triad, an underground goblin gang, and Briar Cudgeon, disgruntled former Lower Elements Police officer. Koboi hatched a plan to overthrow Haven, and later, the whole world. Due to the combined efforts of Artemis Fowl and Holly Short, Koboi's plan was foiled when she and Cudgeon turned against each other- Foaly having taped an earlier conversation between himself and Cudgeon where Cudgeon revealed his plans to betray Koboi, which resulted in her slipping into a coma.
[edit] Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception
Later, in The Opal Deception, it is learned that Koboi did not go into a real coma but rather induced a coma-like state of meditation known as the cleansing coma taught to her by Gola Schweem. Furthermore, Koboi had designed a contingency plan in the event of her defeat, in which funds were diverted to ensure she would be sent to the correct mental hospital, where she had planted agents Mervall and Descant Brill, also pixies. She had also created a clone of herself. Conveniently, fairy cloning technology had progressed to the point where clones had only enough mental power to maintain life support (thus appearing merely a comatose version of the original). The clone was produced to take Koboi's place and allow her to escape completely undetected (Unfortunately for her, the clone briefly saw her before it was put into the tube, leaving a slight clue as to what had taken place).
Prior to her capture and comatose state, Opal Koboi was already a megalomaniac with an obsessive personality. However after she was rescued by the Brill brothers she appeared even more insane than before. Artemis commented that she seemed to be developing the Narcissus Syndrome, having spent so much time in her own company- metaphorically speaking - that nobody else was really 'real' to her any more. There is actually no such mental disorder as the Narcissus Syndrome although the phenomenon Artemis is describing is similar to solipsism. He may actually be referring to Narcissistic personality disorder which Koboi also exhibits behaviour consistent with. She became paranoid and prone to sudden fits of anger which she would take out on the Brill brothers. Later, this even caused her to create a set of rules her pixie enforcers had to follow, including the rule that no one could look at her directly (as she believed this was bad for her skin) and that neither of them could pass wind in her presence. As time goes on it becomes clear that she is losing her mind and she eventually believes she can telepathically read minds. She also exhibited an obsession with chocolate truffles, which ironically contributed to her downfall when Artemis goaded her into opening her booty box, where he had the two bombs intended for use in her plan transferred into.
Once she escaped from the Doctor J. Argon clinic, she put in motion her plan to both exact revenge on her enemies - Artemis Fowl II, Domovoi Butler, LEPrecon officer Holly Short, LEPrecon Commander Julius Root, and the Centaur Foaly - and destroy the fairy population of Haven. She attempted to do this first by having cosmetic surgery done on her to give her the appearance of a human, so she could masquerade as the daughter of Sicilian scientist Giovanni Zito (naming herself Belinda Zito) and then by having a pituitary gland inserted into her skull so she would appear to age normally alongside her appearance. Once she had accomplished this she attempted to upgrade Zito's underground probe so that it would come into contact with the People as it dig through to the center of the Earth, and, in the process, destroy their defences, and much of their city. The conclusion of this scheme would have lain Haven completely exposed to the sensors in the probe, leading humans to discover the fairy population.
Ultimately, her revenge plans failed. She had first intended to use a detonator to either frame or kill Holly Short or Commander Root and then a bio-bomb to kill Artemis Fowl and Butler, but in the end, only Root was killed, and although Holly was successfully framed for his murder, she succeeded in escaping to rescue Artemis Fowl. Butler also survived the attack, and with most of her resources depleted, Koboi was forced to use her other plan (a "troll nasty" one involving the Eleven Wonders exhibit in Haven), originally intended for Foaly, on Holly and Artemis.
Holly and Artemis later escaped, joining up with Butler and the kleptomaniac dwarf Mulch Diggums, and together the four foiled Koboi's plans and not only prevented the destruction of Haven, but also exposed Koboi, who was previously still believed to be in a coma (Although Foaly had used his retina scrubber to obtain a picture of the last thing the clone had seen; Opal herself). Koboi escaped to the surface, intending to flee once again, but due to the implanted pituitary gland, she had lost most of her fairy magic and could only convince an Italian woman who had been near her landing site that she was her daughter. Unfortunately for Koboi it was her last drop of magic and the woman then forced her to labour on the farm, costing Opal her chance to escape. When the LEP came for her a week later, she was "almost happy to see them".
Opal had some of her favorite "home movies" on disc so she could watch them whenever she wanted. These movies included Opal's Father having a nervous breakdown, the attack on Police Plaza, Foaly bawling his eyes out, and Holly and Artemis trapped in the 11 Wonders exhibit.
At the end of Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception, Koboi is assumed to safely be in an LEP prison.
