"Only After Dark" is a song by the British Synthpop group The Human League. It is a version of the Ronson/Richardson composition, originally found on Slaughter On 10th Avenue, the 1974 debut solo album by David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust-era guitarist, Mick Ronson. Originally an album track on the Human League's 1980 album Travelogue it features vocals by Philip Oakey and keyboards by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh; it was produced by Colin Thurston.[1]
The single was pressed by Virgin Records with the full intention of releasing it as the next Human League single in the UK and the first from "Travelogue". But after the limited success of the album it was decided to re-release Empire State Human instead and include "Only After Dark" as a free single to be given away with the first 15000 sales of "Empire State Human". This was perceived by the band as a total lack of faith in their new material, causing great resentment and anger. The rejection would be one of the issues that would eventually contribute to the split of the Mk1 Human League months later. As a free single it wasn't included in the UK chart mechanism.[2] [3]
