Onesiphorus

Onesiphorus (name meaning "bringing profit") was Christian referred to in the New testament letter Second Timothy (2 Tim. 1:16 and 4:19). According to the letter, St. Paul sends greeting to his household, and makes reference to a previous occasion in Rome, where Onesiphorus had sought out the imprisoned Paul, and offered service to him. Paul speaks of Onesiphorus only in the past tense, wishes blessings upon his house, and mercy for him on the day of judgment, supporting the common interpretation that Onesiphorus had at this point died^{[citation needed]}. If this is the case, then St. Paul would be praying for one who was deceased, which would seemingly support the catholic notion of Purgatory.
