[edit] Story
The game follows Monkey D. Luffy's adventure of finding Gold Roger's treasure One Piece, and become the next King of the Pirates. The game follows his adventure during the entire East Blue Saga, where he is looking to start a super crew and enter the grand line. The game ends with the Straw Hat Pirates consisting of, Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zolo, Nami the Navigator, Usopp, and Sanji, as they leave Rogue Town and enter the Grandline.
The game is license under 4KIDS Entertainment, so many of the edits done to the show are done to this game. Roronoa Zoro's name is Roronoa Zolo, Smoker is Chaser, and Sanji has a lollipop instead of a cigarette. Even the game developers took a nod to Sanji's lollipop and made it an item you can collect in the Treasure Menu.
[edit] Gameplay
The game play is the basic 2D platformer. You use many of Luffy's Gum Gum powers to get around the stage, as well as beating up anyone who stands in your way of being the next King of the Pirates. You occasional get "ambushed" where you can no longer go any farther and you must beat all the pirates coming your way before you can go on.
There are 6 Arcs in the game, and in each art is 3 levels. The first two are the standard levels, and the 3rd one is a boss stage where you have to fight the main enemy from the respective arc from the anime. In the 2nd level it isn't uncommon to run into a mini boss, usually the underling that the character you are recruiting fights in the anime. There are also many optional and hidden bosses in the game.
[edit] Graphics
All the pixel art was created by the company Dimps, who are famous for their anime video game graphics. A lot of the graphics in this game were created directly for this game such as all the bosses, except Chaser. In the Japanese-only game, One Piece: Grand Battle Swan Colosseum majority of the graphics as well as the style was made for this game. Instead of porting the game to the Game Boy Advance, Bandai and 4kids wanted to make a new game as they were not at the arcs where Grand Battle Swan Colosseum was at. They reused all of the Straw Hat's sprites, as well as Tashigi and Chaser who is known as Smoker in the Swan Colosseum game.
Of the sprites used in the American Only game, most of the ones used in the Japanese Only game have been edited. Many of the colors used have been refined to be not as vibrant, as well as Sanji's cigarette turned into a Lollipop. New animations were created for Luffy, Sanji and Nami to fit into the platformer format.
[edit] Luffy's Moveset
Luffy is an amazing fighter, and can use his abilities over his Gum Gum Fruit in a variety of different ways. He also has a knack for using his surroundings to advance on. He can be shot out of a cannon and rolled like a barrel, as well as to grab flying objects to get to higher places.

[edit] The Crew
Luffy isn't alone in his quest! After you recruit a character you can now summon them into battle as long as your special meter is filled. They come on to the screen perform their attack, and leave. Though oddly enough, each time you start a new stage, you have to recollect them as they go on ahead without you and stand in different parts of the stage.
- Roronoa Zolo
- Oni Giri: Zolo jumps on stage and quickly slashes the enemies on screen.
- Dragon Twister: Zolo jumps on screen and performs a vertical whirlwind attack.
- Nami the Navigator
- Steal: Nami jumps on the screen and knocks an enemy down, making them drop an item.
- Thunder: Nami uses her "Weather Forcer" to call lightning to hit the stage.
- Usopp

- Combo Kick: Sanji jumps on screen and releases a brawl of kicks.
[edit] Stages
In the game there are 3 stages in every Arc. The First and Second Stages are the basic platformer levels, as well as you collect your crew members to use them at the end of the Second Stage's Mini Boss, and the Final Third Stage, Boss.
[edit] Navy Base
This Arc is based around the Alivda and Morgan Arcs of the anime. Alivda is an optional hidden boss in the first level, and you recruit Roronoa Zolo after defeating the Third Stage Boss, Axe-Hand Morgan.
You start out on Alvida's ship, then in the 2nd level at the Naval Base, in which you meet Zolo who is tied to pole. Then you fight Morgan, so that you can save Zoro's life and so he will join you. Morgan is basically invincible, until he attacks you and misses. His axe is stuck in the ground, and you are allowed to get some free shots. Morgan also whistles, and sends a group of 3 marines to attack you randomly throughout the battle.
[edit] Port Town
These stages are based around the Buggy Arc You run into a thief name Nami, and immediately ask her to join you as a navigator, and she declines you. You fight Mohji and Richie, and Cabaji as mini bosses. If you beat the Third Level Boss, Buggy you obtain Nami in your crew.
Buggy the Clown gains the same immunity as Morgan, if you attack him he will split into pieces making him impossible to attack, and he laughs at you for it. You can attack him when he uses "Chop Chop Buzzsaw", or fires his daggers at you. He is difficult as you have to his Face to do any damage, and your jump attack does the least amount of damage.
[edit] Syrup Village
These stages follows the events in the Captain Kuro Arc. The mini bosses are Jango, as well as the Meowban Brothers. After defeating the boss of this arc, Captain Kuro you add Usopp as well as the Merry Go to the crew.
Captain Kuro, is the first boss you can take head on without the immunity gimmick. He can be attacked at any point, without having to his at a certain time or place. But is not gimmickless, he can teleport random any where on the screen, including behind you. He also has a special called "Cat out of the Bag Attack" in which he runs across the screen back and forth slashing at anything in his path.
[edit] Baratie
This is the floating restaurant levels, that apart of the Baratie Arc. You come to the Baratie looking for a Chef, you find Sanji who like previous characters will turn you down. You must beat Don Krieg's Pirate Armada for him to final join you. Gin is the mini boss at the end of Second stage, and Pearl appears in the stages too. The main boss is none other than Don Kreig himself.
Kreig is a coward to no end. He mets you off at the beginning to converse with Luffy, then he runs away. As you make your way to where he is hiding he fires everything he has, from Poison Suction Cups to Bombs to prevent you from reaching him. Kreig is immune to your attacks when he is attacking, so it is best to stand back, and dodge then attack. In mid battle Krieg will pull out his Poison bomb, and the bottom half of the screen is now deadly to you. He will also use his Mighty Battle Spear on you.
[edit] Arlong Park
In the Arlong Park arc, Nami turns out to be part of another pirate crew, the Arlong Pirates! Because of this you have lost her in your selection of summons. So you must fight Arlong and his crew of Fishmen! The Mini Boss, is not one but three Fishmen all together Choo, Kuroobi, and Hatchi. Arlong is the Final Boss, and after defeating him you will regain the use of Nami.
Arlong is here to prove that Fishmen are the stronger race! He will attack you with all his might, but he is not immune to any of your attacks at all, but unlike the previous bosses he has a 2nd life bar. Eventually in the battle he will start to jump into the water at the bottom of the stage and attack you like a dart. After you get him down to near death he will pull out his giant sword, the battle becomes a race to the top of the stage as he swings at you. The rest of the battle he uses the sword at the top of Arlong Park.
[edit] Roguetown
Rogue Town the place of beginnings and endings, Gold Roger himself was born and died in this very town! You have all of your pirate crew ready time to hit the Grandline! Be before you can, you have a load of past and as well new villains here to prevent you from getting to the sea!
Buggy the clown returns as well as Alvida who just recently ate a cursed fruit and is now beautifully skinny! Besides these pirates you have more bosses heading your way, Tashigi and her Captain, Chaser of the Navy! Chaser uses his abilities of the Smoke Smoke Fruit to snuff you out! He is by far the strongest villain you have faced so far. Even after you defeat him he is determined to catch you, and even chases you to the ending credits!
[edit] Merry Go
Merry Go is a bonus stage in this game. Basically you play as Luffy and you have to beat all the pirates who are attacking the ship before the time runs in. The faster you beat them the more lives you collect. This Stage is also used in the Survival Mode.
The easiest way of defeating the pirates by using the Grab function and gabbing the Mass both vertically or horizontal will cause Luffy to perform the Gum Gum Rocket, which is a one hit kill.
