One is an album by jazz musician Bob James. After working with many other artist, he recorded his own album. This album is the first of a series of jazz-funk classics ( "Two", "Three", and later, "Faces" ). It shows Bob James's interest in classical themes. Like Eumir Deodato did shortly before with the famous Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathoustra", he arranged compositions by Ravel ("Bolero"), Moussorgsky ("Night On Bald Mountain"), Bizet, Pachelbel... showing taste for funky rhythms. "Valley Of The Shadows" is a very cinematic track Lalo Schifrin could have written, setting a thrilling atmosphere, with many different parts and moods. In the Garden is the rendition of Pachelbel's Canon, played with a pure american feeling, with steel guitar. Soulero is his version of Ravel's Bolero. The title is explicit enough. Night on Bald Mountain is Moussorgsky's composition, very funky and full of wah-wah guitar. Feel Like Making Love is one of the titles that made Bob James's fame as a leading composer in what some have called "smooth jazz", along with "Nautilus", a dark and funky track that has been often sampled.
