The song was first released by the Swedish artist Pandora in 1999. It was included on her album No Regrets.
In December 2007 Pandora also released a single with three new produced versions of the song.

The song was then released by Greek singer Anna Vissi in early 2000. It was included on her album Everything I Am. She also sang it at the Miss Universe pageant held in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Kylie Minogue then released "On a Night like This" in late 2000. It is the second single from her Light Years album. It reached number 2 in the UK being held off number 1 by Modjo's "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)". The single reached number 1 in Australia. The song's release coincided with Minogue's performance at the Sydney Olympic Games where she sang this song. "On a Night like This" holds the record in Australia for having the biggest jump back to number one. Minogue performed the song in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games' closing ceremony, watched by a worldwide audience.
