Omsund Bridge

Omsund Bridge (Omsund bru) is two bridges that crosses Omsundet between Frei and Nordlandet, a part of the town of Kristiansund in Møre og Romsdal county in Norway.
The 281 metres long old bridge, now open for pedestrians only is a steel truss arch bridge with a suspended deck.
Omsund Bridge was opened for traffic in April 1940, but it was never officially opened, because of World War II. Local young men just tore down the barricades in the middle of the night. April 22, 1940 German bombers tried to destroy the new bridge, but managed only to kill 15 year old Ingolf Vatten on a bike. In May the new bridge was crucial during the evacuation of Kristiansund. It was finally opened officially in a ceremony on April 24, 2005, 65 years late, and 24 years after it was replaced.
A new cantilever bridge with two lanes and a fenced sidewalk was opened next to the old and narrow bridge in 1981. The bridge carries Norwegian National Road No. 70 (RV 70).
