[edit] Ship Turret Types

The links on this page for Turret and Casemate lead (mainly) to articles on building structures. Anyone feel passionate enough about these warship components to fix the links or write the articles?

[edit] Issue with casement transition

Per Conway's and other sources, the addition of twin 6" guns in gunhouses (not turrets, strictly speaking, as they were not armored), was an afterthought, a response to the criticism that the ships were undergunned compared to the Hawkins class. Since they were not part of the original layout, you wouldn't really say they were a transition design. Besides, the move from casements to turrets in the main battery dates back to the Monitor, and even as these ships were building, casements for secondary batteries were not part of significant future designs, with the exception of the second and third generation Japanese fast battleships and battlecruisers (never built). These ships were archaic as launched. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zorro6204 (talk • contribs) 02:59, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
