Omar Sheika

Omar Sheika (born February 20, 1977 in Paterson, NJ) is an American boxer.

[edit] Amateur career
Sheika was an amateur standout and compiled a stellar career, capturing a National Amateur Middleweight Championship at National AAU Boxing Tournament in 1996.

Sheika turned pro in 1997 and has fought several times for major titles, but has come up short in each attempt. He challenged Joe Calzaghe for the WBO Super Middleweight Title in 2000, but lost via TKO. In 2002 he took on WBC Super Middleweight Title holder Eric Lucas, but lost a decision. In 2004 he fought IBF Super Middleweight Title holder Jeff Lacy, but lost a close decision. In his latest fight he took on Markus Beyer for the WBC Super Middleweight Title, but again came up short in a decision.
Sheika holds a win over imprisoned boxer James Butler in late 2004, Butler's last fight as a boxer before his murder conviction.
