From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Omar Mohamud is a Somali sub-clan, part of the Mohamud Saleeban, itself a part of Majeerteen and Harti Koombe Kablalax, of the Darod tribes. The Omar Mahammud is the largest of the Majeerteen subclans. The Omar Mahammud have played an important role in the history of Somalia, contributing to the foundation of the country and playing a role in the Somali peoples development of nationhood and nationalism.

The Omar Mohamud clan inhabits the majority of the Mudug and southern Nugaal regions of Somalia, and also can be found settled in the Somali Region of Ethiopia (Reserve Area), as well as in the port city of Kismayo and the Jubbada Hoose (Lower Juba) region of southern Somalia. The fourth Prime Minister of Somalia, Abdirizak Haji Hussein; General Mahammad Shaykh Usmaan, who attempted a coup d'état against the Siad Barre regime in April 1978; Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, the former army officer in the Somali National Army and founder of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front, the first president of Puntland and current president of the Somali Transitional Federal Government, all hail from the Omar Mahmoud clan.[citation needed]
