Dr. Omar Davies (born May 28, 1947) is the former Minister of Finance of Jamaica, he has been succeeded by Audley Shaw & by extension Dwight Nelson and Don Wehby.Dr. Davies has significant academic and financial experience, having attained the former as a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of the West Indies (1981 to 1989) and the latter as Director General of the Planning Institute of Jamaica (from 1989 to 1993).
A graduate of the University of the West Indies and Northwestern University in the United States, where he received a doctorate in Economics, Dr. Davies was born in Four Paths, Clarendon on May 28, 1947. He worked as an Assistant Professor at the Ivy League institution, Stanford University in California from 1973 to 1976 before returning home.
He was elected Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Planning Development Project Implementation. This was prior to him assuming his current position. Dr. Davies is a Member of Parliament for South St. Andrew. He is married with three children. Dr. Davies is an excellent and dedicated public servant, his critics however like to point out the "RUN WID IT" speech and the "90's Financial Sector Meltdown" as to justify why they think he has been unethical and a colossal failure respectively.
