[edit] Origins

The name originates, according to South American sources, from the year 1924. Uruguay, the reigning Olympic champions, were defeated in Sportivo Barracas' field by local rivals Argentina, on 2 October 1924. A goal direct from a corner by Cesáreo Onzari in the 15th minute helped Argentina win the game 2-1. The amazing feat was termed "Gol olímpico" from then on.[1]

[edit] History

The only Olympic goal in the history of the FIFA World Cup was scored by Colombian Marcos Coll in a 4-4 draw with the Soviet Union in 1962.

[edit] Origins in English

This term has crept into English language football (soccer) terminology with the growing influence of the game in North America and its close ties to South America. For example, Max Bretos uses it on his Fox Soccer Channel commentaries.
