Officially referred to only as Skeet, the Olympic Skeet shooting event was introduced to the program in 1968. Until 1992, both men and women were allowed to participate, but in 1996 the event was open to men only, which was somewhat controversial due to the fact that the 1992 Olympic Champion was indeed a woman, Zhang Shan of China. However, women had their own World Championships, and in 2000, a female Skeet event was introduced to the Olympic program.
