[edit] Naming the School
With the 54-acre site for the school being located only a couple miles from the Olympic Training Center, naming the school Olympic High School seemed a logical choice; but the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) denied the request to use name. Following further negotiations with the USOC, Sweetwater Union High School District was authorized to use the name Olympic Vista High School.[1] The USOC did eventually approve the use Olympian High School as the name of the school resulting in a quick name change.
[edit] Mission Statement
The mission statement of Olympian High School is that "Every graduate of Olympian High School will qualify and be academically ready for success in a four year college or university." In order to achieve this goal, the school is planning over the years to add as many Advanced Placement classes as possible and also to have the students practice the philosophy of The Habits of Mind, three which are stressed regularly are Metacognition, Intellectual Perseverance and Intellectual Curiosity Another way in which Olympian prepares its students for college or university is teaching common skills that are used daily in college and university known as "The College Readiness Skills". Prior to the official opening of the school, Olympian did a study on college and university students and collected six commonly used skills that many college & university students use which are:
Each skill is taught and practiced every six weeks. Teachers often make assignments to help encourage OHS students to practice each skill, at the end of the six week period the students have to write a letter to the principal(He actually reads every letter) explaining what skill they are using and explaining how they used that skill in each of their classes.
Also every student has to prepare a student portfolio at the end of the year. At most schools this is done during a students senior year, however, all OHS students have to do one each year, Mr John Devore explained that this is done so that students can build up experienced handling the pressures caused by the presentations. During the presentations, students must show samples of their best work during the year in front of either their parents, counselors, or the principal himself. They also have to explain how they accomplished each assignment in the portfolio and relate it to The Habits of Mind and the College Readiness skills. As the years go by, their portfolio increases in size, and eventually students can also analyze how the quality of their work has changed over the years.
