After his active career Kurtz became a hockey coach who, on May 24, 2004, was appointed assistant coach of the Indian National Men's Team after a poor showing by India in the 2004 Men's Hockey Olympic Qualifier, alongside countryman and head coach Gerhard Rach for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
