Oliver Hughes is a councillor on Magherafelt District Council in Northern Ireland. His brother was Francis Hughes, who died in the 1981 Irish hunger strike.
He was first elected to the council during the hunger strike, as an Irish Independence Party candidate. He went on to become a Sinn Féin councillor, but now sits as an independent councillor after quiting the party due to policy changes within Sinn Féin.
There was some speculation that he might contest the 2007 Northern Irish Assembly election as an Independent republican candidate, but this seems not to have happened.
