Oley Speaks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oley Speaks (1874 - 1948) was an accomplished musical composer who was born in Canal Winchester, Ohio (Franklin County).[1] The Canal Winchester Area Historical Society Museum has exhibits about the life of Oley Speaks, including original sheet music written by Speaks.[2] Speaks initially was a railroad clerk until he decided to pursue his musical passions.[1] He was trained as a singer in New York City and began to write songs.[1] One of his songs, "On the Road to Mandalay" (1907) sold over one million copies.[1] Some of Speaks' other songs include:

  • They Met in Bombay (1941) (music: "On the Road to Mandalay")
  • Metropolitan (1935) (music: "On the Road to Mandalay" (1919?) (uncredited))
  • China Seas (1935) (music: "On the Road To Mandalay")
  • Mandalay (1934) (music: "On the Road to Mandalay")[1]
