[edit] E Numbers
Hi. The edit you made on Turmeric is material that comes from this web page: http://www.bryngollie.freeserve.co.uk/E100.htm
do you have permission to submit this material to Wikipedia under the GFDL? -- Tarquin 13:57, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
The data I have added to Wikipedia is in the public domain - are there any restrictions on adding information in the public domain? --OldakQuill 16:55, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
If it's PD, then it's fine, but how do you know? -- Tarquin 23:22, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
At the bottom of http://www.bryngollie.freeserve.co.uk/Enumbers.htm it is written: "This site is still under construction and as such is incomplete but I believe what is here to be current, accurate and in the public domain." So he is saying that "This site is... in the public domain"--OldakQuill 23:36, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Ok. It's a good idea to mention this on the talk pages of the articles where you're pasting this, in case other people spot this too. -- Tarquin 10:07, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Arab Naming Conventions
al-, ul-, ar-, etc. simply mean "the", like in Spanish you have el for masculine or la for feminine. Abd- is a prefix that means "Slave of", thats why you often find people with names like Abdullah (Slave of Allah), Abdurrahman (Slave of the Merciful), etc. Since the names of God in Islam are reserved only for him, you will find al, or ar before to make it clear that it is a title reserved for God, and thus when you find such a name in the name of a person, it will be preceded by Abd. Father of is Abu, like Abu Yusef, father of Yusef, and son of is Bin or Ibn. Im not sure on the difference between the two, but I believe Ibn is considered more polite. Similarily, Bint is daughter, and Umm is mother of; Umm Ali, mother of Ali. DigiBullet 15:43, 19 Apr 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Mozart articles
Thanks for your appreciation. I will keep editing the W.A. Mozart article with historical/critical comments about his works. I would also like to contribute other music articles and (why not?) other topics from my main interests (physics, literature, chess, ...). See you around! Bergonzc 21:47, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Abkhazia
I've been deleting the mentions of Abkhazia in the list of state leaders pages. Abkhazia is not recognized by any country, and so it should be listed, if at all, under Georgia (as has been done on some pages with Somaliland and Somalia). john 10:06, 1 May 2004 (UTC)
May I ask if you were adding it because you were going in alphabetical order, or because you have some sort of interest in Abkhazia? If the latter, I'd really prefer not to get into a lengthy discussion of the rights of the Abkhazian peoples. I've already had enough with my discussions of the rights of the West Papuan peoples. john 10:08, 1 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Why not merge AIS and T fem?
I noticed the articles are largely overlapping and cover essentially the same condition. When merging was proposed, you deleted it without explanation. I don't see any evidence of edit wars or controversy, but before I combine them into a single AIS article with a redirect from T fem, I wanted to do you the courtesy of asking your reasons. I won't go to the trouble of merging if you intend to reverse it. Alteripse 12:35, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
[edit] List of Encyclopedia topics
Hi, you seem to be adding First Name, Title Last Name redirects. Is there a reason. These seem rather unlikely to be of use.--Samuel J. Howard 09:31, May 4, 2004 (UTC)
You could just delete the entries on the list page. It says this is ok to do (in fact says to do this) on the top level list page.--Samuel J. Howard 09:46, May 4, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] 1911
You have been adding articles like Baron Karl Mack von Leiberich from the 1911. But please note that these and even Sir Alexander Mackenzie do not follow our Naming Convention. Titles are not used in article names except for..., sort of thing. Rmhermen 13:17, May 4, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Zurbarán
Hi. It looks like you cut-and-pasted the text from Francisco de Zurbaran to Francisco Zurbarán. If "Francisco Zurbarán" is the more proper rendering of his name, the move is good. However doing it by cut-and-paste is not, since that looses the article history; that's why we have the "move page" feature, and why it should be used if you move a page to a different title. Please use that feature when moving a page in the future. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 18:56, 10 May 2004 (UTC)
- Thank you for you're note. However, I searched for the individual - did not find one and formatted some Britannica as well as including image etc. I later found this other article also from Britannica and turned it into a redirect. I did not remove mine as it had, I feel, better formatting and paragraphing as well as the image mark up. --OldakQuill 19:03, 10 May 2004 (UTC)
-
- Ah, so you started your own fresh article based on the 1911 Britannica, not realizing that someone else had already done something similar at a different spelling? Ok then. I suggest you double check the "de Zurbaran" article history to see if anyone had added anything to the Britannica article that's worth adding to your version (if you haven't checked already). Then if you wouldn't mind a bit more cleanup work, you could check the "what links here" to make indirect links (via redirects) into direct ones. Best wishes, -- Infrogmation 19:16, 10 May 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Donald Byrne
Hiya, I have changed the article on Donald Byrne into what I think is a quite reasonable stub. I hope you don't mind me removing your "speedy deletion candidate" tag from it - I'm not 100% sure what the proper course of action is in such cases. --Stormie 00:07, May 11, 2004 (UTC)
- Certainly not - I wanted to delete it because it was useless. You have improved it to the extent it needs not be deleted. Thanks for telling me. --OldakQuill 00:10, 11 May 2004 (UTC)
-
- I have to say that the original form of it made me laugh out loud.. "Donald Byrne was apparently a chess Grand Master", now that's incisive fact-finding! :-) --Stormie 00:29, May 11, 2004 (UTC)

Just out of curiosity, and i am asking this to everyone who is standing, i would like to post a question. Could you point me to two or three of your favourite contributions in Wikipedia? [edit] WWII
I notice that you're adding WWII categories to lot of material. It appears that there is a problem with pages that have a right aligned element, such as a table or photograph, and the category placement. Putting the category link in completely throws the look of the page out. It is especially bad in the Monobook skin. I'm therefore going to revert your additions for things like ships which have a table in place. It's a nasty bug, and hopefully it will be sorted out soon, and then your changes can be readded. David Newton 19:56, 30 May 2004 (UTC)
- I am not adding these categories. Someone else added them as "WW2 XXX" for example Category:WW2 operations and battles. We reached a consensus in the channel to change WW2 to World War II. This is what I have been doing.--Oldak Quill 20:00, 30 May 2004 (UTC)
-
- I'll leave matters for 24 hours as you suggest. This is a nasty bug, but hopefully it should be easier to fix than the others that have cropped up.David Newton 20:07, 30 May 2004 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the info. "World War II people" at least was a broken link, that's why I was using the other one. I see it's not now, and I agree the longer form is better. Also, I'd like to repeat David's concern: I noted too the category links making the formatting go haywire. VV 00:06, 31 May 2004 (UTC)
- Wikipedia's policy on this issue is to put the category labels in due to the bug being sorted out within the next 24 hours by developers.--Oldak Quill 00:09, 31 May 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Categories
Just thought you'd like to know that when you add cetegories to people's articles, you can make them show up in alphabetical order by surname (like in by adding the name to be alphabetized after a "|" character, like this: . [edit] List of encylopedia topics
Well, I compiled that list some time ago from several lists. I remember the 1911 encyclopedia in that, but not much more, as I didn't save the source lists. I had the list up almost 2 years ago, but it was taken down again for causing the wikipedia to slow down because of all the links ;-) So I kept only the wiki sources. Can you check the capitlisation of the vans, vons and des, e.g. John William Van Druten should not be John William van Druten; this is in accordance with standard Dutch practice, and probably should be used except for odd cases where the larger van is used, e.g. Dick Van Dyke. [edit] New pages
Congratulations on the number of new pages you're starting I just have one small point of feedback. I notice you're disambiguating US to United States of America, but you're not doing it for any other nationality. Links such as German and Spanish go only to disambig pages which means it takes extra work for someone else to clean up after you and insert German or Spanish (or whatever other nationality it is). Do you think you could insert the correct link to start with? Cheers. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 12:06, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: List of emergency special sessions...
I'm glad someone else wanted that list. As soon as I saw the "did you know", I tried to find a full list on Wikipedia and couldn't. The UN's page has a list [1] that I got most of the details from. The topics are very brief, so I had to do some research into that. This page gave me a little more information into that, and then I was able to use Wikipedia to do more research into, for example, what important happened in Hungary in 1956. It's (virtually?) impossible to find full resolution text online pre-1997, though, so getting quotes or from-the-horse's-mouth details will be difficult at best.
As for suggestions for the non-emergency special sessions, there's obviously the UN's official page for that [2], and Googling. Some of the topics on that page look pretty terse ("Palestine"? "Social Development"?), so I guess some research into better explanations would be necessary at some point. Good luck. - Plutor 14:42, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Lists of accidents and incidents on commercial airliners
I have editied the individual lists so that they now point to each other and reference Incidents in Aviation. I would propose that the article Lists of accidents and incidents on commercial airliners be redirected to one of the lists, say the "by year" list since it is the most neutral. That would eliminate a layer of indirection and solve the merging issue.

[edit] US politicians
In looking through lists of various US governors and senators, I often see articles created by you that are titled according to the person's full name, rather than the most commonly used name, which call politicians by the ambiguous term "political figures", which give dates in office as "between a and b" instead of "from a to b" (by that wording, maybe it's neither a nor b, but something in between?), and which use the redirect "United States of America" instead of "United States". While I appreciate the effort it must take to get all these articles started, if you are going to write more of them, could you revise the format you use so there's no need to go back and make all the above changes every time? Thanks for the comments on the Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates#Windows_XP page! I've added two more photos, but what other photos (screenshots I'm guessing) would you like to see? Also, I'm unsure how to remove some of the lists and make it more like prose.

[edit] Mongol emperors
Hi OldakQuill,
First of all, thanks for all of your work on the Mongol emperors on the state leaders by year pages. :)
I'm trying to extend the line backwards, but eventually we'd have to stop calling it "China (Yuan Dynasty)" and start calling it Mongol Empire, since that's what it started out as, after all. Do you know when we should do this? -- ran (talk) 22:10, Oct 21, 2004 (UTC)
- Presumably during Kublai Khan's reign - he did, afterall, take China - becoming the first Yuan Dynasty ruler of China - those who preceeded him were simply Mongol Khans. --Oldak Quill 08:04, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)
