I'm taking out the reference to jay adams. this is about the song not him.

Can anyone verify the caretaker story? I always thought it was pretty clear that the narrator is addressing his father.

On a youtube video, Neil Young claims that he wrote this song for a squatter that was living on his farm, however, on the DVD of his Prarie Wind tour, he claims that this song is about the man that he bought his ranch off.

In the DVD of his Prairie Wind tour (actually the DVD of Jonathan Demme's Heart of Gold film), he does *not* state that he bought his ranch from the old man. He says that the old man was the caretaker on the ranch; he repeats this story at least once (see youtube for Feb, 1971 BBC performance of the song, in which he also says he purchased the ranch from "two lawyers"). Also, there doesn't seem to me to be anything in the lyrics that makes it "pretty clear" that the narrator is addressing his father.

In the Live at Massey Hall release he tells the same story pretty much as on Heart of Gold, but not as detailed. 71.175.61.78 17:46, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Oldman45.jpg

Image:Oldman45.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
