Old Grand-Dad
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Old Grand-Dad (often shortened to simply OGD or "The OGD") is a bourbon whiskey from Nelson County, Kentucky. The company was created by Raymond B. Hayden and named after his grandfather Basil Hayden, Sr., a well known distiller during his lifetime who is depicted on the front of each bottle.
The Hayden family's first commercial distillery was created in 1840 and the Whiskey has been in production since that time -- despite several changes of ownership. During prohibition, the company produced "medicinal whiskey" for sick, blind, and lame patients.
Today, Old Grand-Dad is one of the ten best selling straight whiskies coming in three different bottlings: the standard 86 proof, the 100 proof "Bonded," and the 114 Barrel Proof (sold in a handsome collector's box).
The 100 proof "Bonded" is become increasingly popular amongst twenty- and thirty-somethings due to its cheap retail price (usually $18).
OGD has attracted a cult-like following in recent years, resulting in bourbon connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike asking for the brand by name.
