Old Codgers Cottage

Was built in 1847 by Augustus Pugin who was responsible for building the Palace of Westminster.He was commissioned by the railway company to build the properties for their staff when the new Windermere railway station was being built.

Old Codgers Cottage was made of traditional lakeland stone and formed part of a row of Terraced Houses. Research shows that it was occupied by people who held the rank of Head drayman for the railway.The house next door was built for the station master, this property was slightly larger internally.

Research shows that in 1871 John Coward occupied the property with his wife Agnes, 3 children and a lodger.

The property was still in Railway hands in 1901 when George Carter again Head Drayman was living there with his wife Barbara and their 3 children.

Now that Windermere as become a significant toursit attraction the property is a Holiday Cottage and so are vast number of similar cottages located in the same street but still retains a lot of its original character.
