Olavakkode

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Olavakkode is a town in Kerala, India. It is near the city of Palakkad, and as such the two places have close historic, economic, and political ties. Olavakkode is the original name of the present Palakkad Junciton railway station. The place where the Railway Junction is situated is Olavakkode and hence the railway station was called "Olavakkode Junction", and before renaming it, this important Southern Railway Divisional office was called "Olavakkode division". In those days, the Broad Gauge Railway junction was situated here whereas the Meter Gauge Railway station called "Palakkad Town" was situated inside the town area of Palakkad (In those days the name of the place was "Palghat"). Olavakkode's main areas are Kavilpad (Kavalpad) village and the Railway Colony. It also houses the Divisional Railway hospital. The Palakkad main town is about 5 km from Olavakkode. Important temple near to Olavakkode is the Thirumananghat Shiva Temple at Kavalpad village. The name of the place lost its popularity when the Indian Railways decided to rename the railway station to "Palakkad Junction".

Olavakkode is also the entry point by road from the north Malabar. Malampuzha Dam and garden is a tourist centre past Olavakkode.
