Octavist is a male singer vocal range, especially in Russian Orthodox vocal literature. This voice type is much lower than what the Western school of music terms "basso profondo." Indeed, a man of this voice type sings a full octave below the normal bass register. This practice and tradition is illustrated in the CD "Basso Profondo From Old Russia". On the sixth track, "Do Not Reject Me In My Old Age", the oktavist soloist sings a G1, history's lowest recorded vocal note.
Tom Grose, in his 2007 release of the CD "Music For Television", in his song "Theme from Diseased", has hit a note below G1, previously believed to be history's lowest recorded vocal note.
